Why Slowing Down Might Be the Most Spiritual Thing You Do

By Kristy | Priestess of the Mystics

We live in a world that celebrates what's next.

Finish one project...

Start another.

Complete one course...

Buy the next one.

Book a healing...

Then immediately look for the next breakthrough.

Somewhere along the way, we've quietly started believing that transformation comes from constantly doing more.

But what if we've misunderstood where real change actually happens?

After many years of working with clients and reflecting on my own spiritual journey, I've come to believe something very different.

Sometimes the greatest transformation doesn't happen while we're doing the work.

It happens when we finally give ourselves permission to stop.

We've Become Addicted to Momentum

It's easy to mistake movement for progress.

Our calendars are full.

Our minds are busy.

Even our spiritual journeys can become another checklist.

Meditation.

Healing session.

Journal.

Workshop.

Retreat.

Next course.

Next activation.

Next ritual.

None of these things are wrong.

In fact, they're beautiful practices.

The challenge comes when we never pause long enough to let any of them truly become part of us.

Growth isn't only about what we receive.

It's also about what we allow ourselves to absorb.

Every Beautiful Experience Needs Space

Think back to one of the most meaningful experiences you've ever had.

Perhaps it was a holiday.

The birth of a child.

A retreat.

A healing session.

A life-changing conversation.

Did you notice that you kept thinking about it afterwards?

You reflected on it.

You saw things differently.

You began making different choices.

The experience didn't finish when the moment ended.

It continued quietly shaping you long afterwards.

Spiritual experiences are no different.

Healing continues.

Ritual continues.

Transformation continues.

If we give it space to.

My Biggest Lesson Didn't Happen During the Pilgrimage

One of the most powerful spiritual experiences of my life wasn't actually the lesson I expected.

I travelled overseas for a Priestess pilgrimage, believing it would feel like a peaceful retreat.

Instead, it was full of movement, sacred work and incredible experiences.

It was beautiful.

But when it ended, I made a mistake.

I landed home, changed suitcases and immediately left again for a busy cruise.

There was no pause.

No quiet.

No opportunity to process everything I had experienced.

Eventually my body slowed me down for me.

I became unwell.

Looking back, I realised something important.

The pilgrimage had changed me.

But I hadn't given myself any space to let those changes become part of who I was.

That lesson has stayed with me ever since.

You Don't Need a Week Off

One of the biggest misconceptions about slowing down is that it has to be dramatic.

You don't need to disappear into the mountains.

You don't need to cancel your life.

Sometimes slowing down looks like:

  • taking your morning tea outside instead of answering emails

  • walking without headphones

  • watching the sunrise before reaching for your phone

  • sitting quietly for five minutes after meditation instead of rushing into the next task

  • allowing yourself to simply notice how you feel

Small moments of presence often create the deepest integration.

The Present Moment Is Where Change Anchors

One idea has become central to my own spiritual practice.

Be where you are.

Not where you were yesterday.

Not where you hope to be next month.

Right here.

Right now.

When we become fully present, something beautiful happens.

Our nervous system settles.

Our breathing slows.

Our awareness expands.

We begin noticing ourselves again.

That quiet awareness is often where transformation finally finds somewhere to land.

You Don't Have to Earn Rest

Many people treat rest as a reward.

"I'll slow down once I've finished everything."

The problem is...

Everything is never finished.

There will always be another email.

Another appointment.

Another opportunity.

Another project.

If we wait until life becomes quiet before allowing ourselves to rest, we may be waiting a very long time.

Instead, what if rest simply became part of how we lived?

Not because we'd earned it.

Because we needed it.

Your Cup of Tea Is More Powerful Than You Think

One of my favourite daily rituals is beautifully simple.

Making a cup of tea.

Not while scrolling.

Not while answering messages.

Not while mentally planning the rest of the day.

Just making the tea.

Standing outside.

Feeling the grass beneath my feet.

Watching the steam rise.

Breathing.

Those few quiet minutes remind me to come back to myself.

They remind me that transformation isn't always found in extraordinary moments.

Sometimes it's found in ordinary ones that we choose to fully experience.

Give Yourself Time to Become

We're often so eager to become the next version of ourselves that we forget to appreciate who we're becoming today.

Growth isn't a race.

Healing isn't a competition.

Spirituality isn't about collecting experiences.

It's about allowing those experiences to gently shape the way we live.

Sometimes the wisest thing you can do isn't searching for the next breakthrough.

Sometimes...

It's simply making another cup of tea.

Stepping outside.

Taking a deep breath.

And giving yourself permission to let everything you've already received quietly become part of you.

Because transformation doesn't only happen when life is moving.

Sometimes...

It happens when you finally stop long enough to notice it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is slowing down important after spiritual work?

Slowing down gives your mind, body and energy time to process what you've experienced. Rather than immediately moving on to the next activity, quiet moments help the energetic shifts from healing, rituals or retreats settle into everyday life.

What is healing integration?

Healing integration is the period after a healing experience where your body and energy continue processing and adapting to the changes that have begun. This often happens through rest, grounding, reflection and simple daily practices.

Do I need to take time off after every healing session?

Not necessarily. Integration doesn't require putting your life on hold. Even small moments of presence, such as walking in nature, journalling or quietly enjoying a cup of tea, can help support the process.

What are simple ways to support spiritual integration?

Grounding in nature, drinking plenty of water, journalling, resting when needed, practising mindfulness and allowing yourself moments of stillness can all help your body integrate spiritual and energetic work.
