Discernment Is One of the Most Spiritual Skills You'll Ever Learn

When people first begin exploring spirituality, they often imagine the most important skills will be meditation, intuition, energy healing or connecting with Spirit.
Those are all beautiful practices.
But over the years, I've come to believe that one skill quietly sits beneath them all.
Discernment.
Not because the world is something to fear.
But because the world is full of voices.
Every day we're surrounded by advice.
Social media posts.
Energy updates.
Oracle readings.
Predictions.
Teachers.
Mentors.
Courses.
Books.
Videos.
Opinions.
Some of it will resonate deeply.
Some of it won't.
Learning to recognise the difference may be one of the greatest gifts you ever give yourself.
Spirituality Should Never Replace Your Inner Knowing

One of the biggest misconceptions about spirituality is that someone else always knows what's best for you.
That a teacher will always have the answer.
That an intuitive will always see more than you can.
That Spirit only speaks through someone else.
I don't believe that's true.
A good spiritual teacher doesn't ask you to stop trusting yourself.
They help you strengthen your own relationship with your intuition.
Their role isn't to replace your inner wisdom.
It's to help you hear it more clearly.
Why Fear Makes Discernment Difficult
Have you ever noticed how difficult it is to think clearly when you're frightened?
Fear changes everything.
Your breathing.
Your nervous system.
Your ability to pause.
When fear takes over, we naturally look for someone else to tell us what to do.
That's why discernment almost always begins with one simple step.
Slow down.
Before believing a message.
Before making a decision.
Before reacting.
Pause.
Take a breath.
Allow your nervous system to settle.
Because you cannot truly discern while you're sitting in panic.
Not Every Message Belongs to You
One of the beautiful things about social media is that wisdom has never been more accessible.
The challenge is that information has never been more abundant either.
One video says you're entering a powerful new chapter.
Another warns of spiritual attack.
Another predicts unexpected abundance.
Another tells you someone from your past is returning.
After a while, everything begins sounding personal.
But here's something I gently remind my students.
Not every message is meant for you.
Some readings will resonate deeply.
Others won't.
Neither experience means you've done something wrong.
Discernment allows you to quietly say,
"That message is beautiful... but it isn't mine."
And then keep scrolling.
Your Body Often Knows Before Your Mind Does
One of the simplest ways to strengthen discernment is to pay attention to how your body responds.
Does this message create peace?
Or urgency?
Does it invite curiosity?
Or fear?
Does it encourage thoughtful reflection?
Or pressure you into making an immediate decision?
Our bodies are wonderfully wise.
Long before our minds begin analysing, our nervous system often recognises whether something feels safe, aligned and trustworthy.
Learning to listen to that response is a spiritual practice in itself.
Questions Worth Asking

Whenever I receive guidance from anyone, I quietly ask myself a few simple questions.
Does this feel aligned with what I already know to be true?
Am I feeling calm enough to make this decision?
Does this guidance leave me feeling empowered or dependent?
Am I responding from fear...
Or from trust?
These questions aren't about doubting everyone.
They're about remembering that your own wisdom deserves a place in the conversation too.
Discernment Is Built Through Practice
Many people think discernment is something we're born with.
In reality, it's something we strengthen over time.
Every time you pause before reacting...
Every time you choose to ground yourself before making a decision...
Every time you check in with your own intuition before asking someone else...
You're strengthening that inner compass.
Like any spiritual practice, it becomes easier with consistency.
The Goal Isn't to Stop Seeking Guidance
Seeking guidance is a beautiful part of a spiritual journey.
I've had incredible teachers.
I've learnt from wonderful mentors.
I still seek wisdom from others.
Discernment doesn't ask us to stop learning.
It simply reminds us not to hand away our own voice in the process.
The healthiest spiritual relationships create independence, not dependence.
They encourage questions.
They welcome curiosity.
They celebrate your own growth.
Your Intuition Deserves Your Trust
One of the greatest joys of teaching is watching someone slowly begin trusting themselves.
Not because they no longer ask questions.
But because they no longer believe every answer has to come from someone else.
Your intuition has always been speaking.
Sometimes it whispers.
Sometimes it nudges.
Sometimes it simply creates a quiet sense of knowing that something feels right... or doesn't.
The more often you listen, the clearer that relationship becomes.
Spiritual Growth Is About Remembering
Perhaps discernment isn't really something we learn.
Perhaps it's something we remember.
A quiet remembering that your soul has wisdom.
That your intuition matters.
That your relationship with Spirit is personal.
That you are allowed to ask questions.
That you are allowed to pause.
That you are allowed to seek another opinion.
And that you never have to give away your power simply because someone speaks with confidence.
Because one of the most spiritual things you'll ever learn isn't how to hear someone else's voice.
It's how to recognise your own.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is spiritual discernment?
Spiritual discernment is the ability to thoughtfully recognise what genuinely feels aligned with your own intuition and values rather than automatically accepting every message or piece of advice you encounter. It grows stronger through reflection, grounding and practice.
Why is discernment important in spirituality?
Discernment helps you respond from clarity rather than fear. It encourages you to pause, reflect and check in with your own inner knowing before making important spiritual decisions.
Can I trust my own intuition?
Learning to trust your intuition is a gradual process. The more you create moments of stillness, grounding and self-reflection, the more familiar your own inner guidance becomes. Trusted teachers can support that journey, but they should never replace your own relationship with your intuition.
Is it okay to ask for a second opinion in spiritual work?
Absolutely. Ethical spiritual guidance welcomes thoughtful questions and respects your right to seek another perspective. A healthy spiritual journey encourages curiosity and empowers you to make informed decisions rather than acting from pressure or fear.
