The Moment You Release the Story Is the Moment You Begin to Heal
The Moment You Release the Story Is the Moment You Begin to Heal
By Kristy | Priestess of the Mystics
Have you ever noticed that sometimes it isn't the event itself that continues hurting...
It's the story you keep telling yourself about it?
Perhaps someone betrayed your trust.
Perhaps a relationship ended.
Perhaps you lost a job you loved.
The event happened once.
But the story...
Sometimes we replay that for years.
Every time we revisit it, our body remembers.
Our emotions return.
Our nervous system responds as though it's happening all over again.
Without realising it, we can end up carrying experiences that our soul has been ready to release for a very long time.
Healing isn't about pretending those experiences never happened.
It's about deciding they no longer get to write the next chapter of your life.
There Is a Difference Between Feeling and Reliving
One of the biggest misunderstandings I see in the healing world is the belief that healing means endlessly revisiting our past.
Many people believe they have to analyse every conversation.
Understand every wound.
Revisit every painful memory.
Of course, there are times when reflection is incredibly valuable.
Awareness creates wisdom.
But healing doesn't ask us to become trapped in our history.
It asks us to move through it.
There's a beautiful difference between allowing yourself to feel an emotion...
And continually reliving the event that created it.
One creates freedom.
The other quietly keeps us connected to the pain.
Your Body Already Knows How to Release

Have you ever felt emotion rise unexpectedly?
Perhaps sadness.
Perhaps anger.
Perhaps grief.
Nothing in your current day explains why it's there.
Many people immediately begin searching for the reason.
"What happened?"
"Why do I feel like this?"
"What memory is this connected to?"
Sometimes there is an answer.
Sometimes there isn't.
And that's okay.
Your body doesn't always need your mind to solve the emotion.
Sometimes it simply needs permission to move it.
When we stop resisting what we're feeling, something remarkable often happens.
The emotion begins changing.
It softens.
It shifts.
Eventually...
It leaves.
The Story Feels Familiar
Our minds are incredibly clever.
They don't like uncertainty.
When an emotion surfaces, the mind naturally wants to explain it.
It starts gathering evidence.
Remember when this happened?
What about that conversation?
Maybe it's because of this person.
Before long, we're no longer experiencing the feeling.
We're living inside the story again.
The strange thing is...
Our brains often choose what's familiar over what's peaceful.
Even painful stories can become familiar.
Healing gently asks us to choose something different.
Imagine Decluttering Your Home
One of my favourite ways to explain healing is through something we've all experienced.
Decluttering.

Imagine emptying every cupboard in your home.
Suddenly everything is everywhere.
For a while, your house actually looks worse than it did before you started.
You find old paperwork.
Broken kitchen gadgets.
Clothes you haven't worn in years.
Things you completely forgot you owned.
Now imagine picking up something you know you no longer need...
Only to place it straight back into the cupboard.
Not because you want it.
But because it feels familiar.
That's exactly what happens when we keep returning to old emotional stories.
Healing had already brought the emotion to the surface.
It was ready to leave.
Instead...
We quietly packed it away again.
Gratitude Changes the Ending
One of the most powerful practices I've discovered is replacing resistance with gratitude.
Not gratitude because something painful happened.
But gratitude for what it taught you.
Perhaps a heartbreak showed you how deeply you're capable of loving.
Perhaps losing a job opened the door to a career you never would have considered.
Perhaps disappointment redirected your life in ways you couldn't have imagined at the time.
Gratitude doesn't erase the pain.
It transforms the meaning we attach to it.
And sometimes...
That's enough to loosen its grip.
You Don't Have to Carry Everything Forward
One of the greatest acts of self-compassion is recognising that not every experience deserves a permanent place in your future.
Some memories become wisdom.
Some become resilience.
Some become beautiful reminders of how far you've come.
Others...
Can simply be released.
Not forgotten.
Not denied.
Released.
Because carrying yesterday's pain doesn't make you stronger.
Sometimes it simply makes the journey heavier than it needs to be.
Healing Is Choosing Again
Healing isn't one dramatic moment.
It's a thousand small choices.
Choosing not to replay the conversation.
Choosing to breathe instead of panic.
Choosing curiosity instead of judgement.
Choosing to notice the feeling...
Without building a home for it.
Little by little, those choices begin creating something extraordinary.
Peace.
Not because life stopped being challenging.
But because you stopped asking old stories to define who you are becoming.
The Next Time an Emotion Appears...
Pause.
Instead of immediately asking,
"Why am I feeling this?"
Try asking,
"Is this asking to be understood... or simply released?"
Then breathe.
Notice where the feeling sits in your body.
Thank it for what it came to teach you.
And when you're ready...
Let it go.
Because healing doesn't happen the moment we understand every chapter of our past.
Sometimes...
Healing begins the moment we decide we no longer need to keep reading the same page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does "releasing the story" mean?
Releasing the story doesn't mean pretending something never happened. It means allowing yourself to acknowledge the experience without continually reliving it or allowing it to define your future.
Is it unhealthy to revisit the past?
Reflecting on the past can be valuable when it helps you learn and grow. However, repeatedly replaying painful experiences without moving forward can sometimes keep you emotionally connected to them rather than supporting healing.
How do I know if I'm holding onto an old story?
You may notice the same memories triggering strong emotional reactions long after the event has passed. You might find yourself replaying conversations, imagining different outcomes or feeling emotionally stuck in a situation that has already ended.
Can energy healing help me let go of emotional patterns?
Many people find that energy healing helps create a sense of emotional spaciousness, allowing old patterns and emotions to gently surface so they can be acknowledged and released as part of their personal healing journey.
