The Secret to Building a Spiritual Practice You'll Actually Stick To

By Kristy | Priestess of the Mystics

If you've ever started a spiritual practice only to abandon it a few weeks later...

You're not alone.

Perhaps you bought the Oracle cards.

Downloaded a meditation app.

Bought the crystals.

Promised yourself this time would be different.

Then life became busy.

The cards stayed in their box.

The meditation never happened.

The journal gathered dust on the bedside table.

Slowly, without even noticing, your spiritual practice disappeared.

Many people believe this happens because they aren't disciplined enough.

I don't think that's true.

More often than not...

It's because we've accidentally made spirituality too difficult to begin.

We Overcomplicate the Very Thing That's Meant to Bring Us Peace

One of the biggest misconceptions about spirituality is that it needs to be elaborate.

A dedicated meditation room.

A beautiful altar.

The perfect crystals.

The right incense.

Thirty minutes of meditation.

Journalling.

Oracle cards.

A gratitude practice.

Protection.

Manifestation.

Before we've even started, we've created a routine that feels impossible to maintain.

It's no wonder we struggle to stay consistent.

When your spiritual practice feels overwhelming, your brain naturally begins avoiding it.

Not because you don't want the connection.

Because it simply feels too hard to begin.

The Power of Least Resistance

One of the most important ideas I teach is something beautifully simple.

Create as little resistance as possible.

Think about brushing your teeth.

You don't spend ten minutes preparing yourself each morning.

Everything you need is already there.

The toothbrush.

The toothpaste.

The sink.

It's easy.

Your spiritual practice deserves that same simplicity.

The easier it is to begin, the more likely you'll actually do it.

Stop Hiding the Things You Love

One of the easiest ways to remove resistance is to stop putting everything away.

If your Oracle cards live inside a cupboard...

You're much less likely to use them.

If your journal is hidden in a drawer...

You'll probably forget it's there.

If your meditation cushion is buried in the spare room...

Meditation quietly becomes another task that feels inconvenient.

Instead...

Allow your spiritual tools to become part of your everyday environment.

Leave one Oracle deck on the kitchen bench.

Keep your favourite crystal beside your computer.

Place your journal beside your favourite chair.

Not because your home needs to look spiritual.

But because your practice becomes visible.

When something is within reach, it's much easier to return to it.

You Don't Need a Dedicated Meditation Room

One of the biggest worries I hear from beginners is this:

"I don't have enough space."

They imagine every spiritual person has an entire room dedicated to meditation, altars and crystal grids.

The truth is...

You don't need any of that.

Your spiritual practice can happen at your kitchen table.

On your lounge.

At the beach.

In the garden.

On a park bench during your lunch break.

Connection doesn't depend on a room.

It depends on your willingness to be present.

Create a Moving Altar

If I could offer one practical tip to anyone beginning their spiritual journey, it would be this.

Create a small basket.

That's it.

Inside that basket you might keep:

  • one Oracle deck

  • a favourite crystal

  • a candle

  • a lighter

  • headphones for meditation

  • a journal

  • a small bottle of anointing oil

When you're ready to connect, simply take the basket wherever you feel called to sit.

Your lounge.

Your bedroom.

The backyard.

A sunny corner of the garden.

Everything you need is already together.

No searching.

No collecting supplies.

No losing momentum halfway through because you can't find the lighter.

When you've finished, place everything back into the basket until tomorrow.

Simple.

Beautiful.

Practical.

Your spiritual practice becomes portable.

It moves with you.

Small Decisions Remove Big Obstacles

Sometimes the smallest choices make the biggest difference.

One of my favourite examples is meditation.

Instead of scrolling through hundreds of guided meditations every morning...

Choose one the night before.

Better still...

Choose one meditation for the entire week.

When you wake up, there are no decisions left to make.

You simply press play.

It's amazing how much easier something becomes when you've already removed the hardest part: deciding what to do.

Build Around the Life You Already Have

Rather than trying to create extra time, look for the moments that already exist.

Waiting for the kettle to boil.

Walking the dog.

Your lunch break.

Sitting in the car before driving home.

Those ordinary moments can become extraordinary rituals when approached with intention.

A spiritual practice doesn't need to interrupt your life.

It can gently weave itself through it.

The Goal Isn't Perfection

Many people stop because they miss one day.

Then two.

Then a week.

Eventually they decide they've failed.

But spirituality has never been about perfect attendance.

It's about returning.

Again.

And again.

Every time you come back to your practice, you're strengthening your relationship with yourself.

Not proving anything to anyone else.

Make It Easy to Say Yes

At the heart of every sustainable spiritual practice is one simple question.

"How can I make this easier?"

Not easier because it isn't important.

Easier because you want it to become part of your everyday life.

The less resistance you create...

The more naturally your practice begins unfolding.

And before long, it no longer feels like another task on your to-do list.

It simply becomes part of who you are.

Because spirituality isn't built through grand gestures.

It's built through the tiny moments you choose to come home to yourself, one day at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I keep starting and stopping my spiritual practice?

Many people don't stop because they lack motivation. They stop because they've unintentionally made their spiritual practice too complicated. Simplifying your routine and removing unnecessary barriers can make it much easier to stay consistent.

Do I need a dedicated meditation room?

No. A meaningful spiritual practice can happen anywhere you feel comfortable and present. Your kitchen table, backyard, local park or a quiet corner of your home can all become beautiful places to connect.

What is a moving altar?

A moving altar is a small basket or box containing the spiritual tools you regularly use, such as an Oracle deck, crystal, candle, journal and headphones. Keeping everything together makes it easier to create a spiritual practice wherever you choose to spend time.

How can I make meditation easier to stick to?

One simple strategy is to choose your meditation the night before instead of searching for one when you're ready to begin. Removing small decisions helps reduce resistance and makes it much easier to maintain a consistent practice.
