Why Healing Sometimes Feels Worse Before It Gets Better

By Kristy | Priestess of the Mystics

Have you ever started a healing journey expecting to feel lighter...

Only to wake up the next morning feeling emotional, exhausted or wondering if something had actually gone wrong?

You're not alone.

In fact, it's one of the most common questions I hear from people after an energy healing session or when they begin doing deeper inner work.

"I thought I was supposed to feel better."

"I've suddenly become so emotional."

"Why is all of this coming up now?"

It can feel confusing.

Sometimes it can even make people question whether healing is really working.

But what if those emotions weren't a sign that something had gone wrong?

What if they were actually a sign that something was finally beginning to move?

Healing Doesn't Always Feel Comfortable

One of the biggest misconceptions about healing is that it's supposed to feel peaceful from beginning to end.

We imagine that once we start working on ourselves, everything should immediately become lighter.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes people walk away from a healing session feeling calm, clear and deeply relaxed.

But sometimes...

The next day brings tears.

Old emotions seem to appear out of nowhere.

You might feel more sensitive than usual.

You may even find yourself questioning everything.

That doesn't necessarily mean you've taken a step backwards.

Often, it means your body has finally decided it's safe enough to let something go.

Why Emotions Can Surface After Healing

Think about what happens when you decide to declutter your home.

Before the room looks beautiful...

It usually looks worse.

Every cupboard has been emptied.

Boxes cover the floor.

Clothes are piled on the bed.

For a little while, it feels like you've created a bigger mess than the one you started with.

But that's part of the process.

Healing works in much the same way.

As old emotional patterns begin loosening, they often rise to the surface before they leave completely.

The sadness you suddenly notice.

The frustration.

The grief.

The unexpected tears.

They aren't always new emotions.

Sometimes they're simply old experiences finally asking to be acknowledged before they're released.

Don't Get Caught in the Story

One of the most powerful lessons I've learnt on my own healing journey is surprisingly simple.

Don't get caught in the story.

This doesn't mean ignoring your emotions.

Far from it.

It means noticing them without immediately trying to explain them.

Perhaps you suddenly notice sadness sitting in your chest.

Instead of asking,

"Why am I feeling this again?"

or replaying something that happened years ago...

Simply acknowledge it.

"That's interesting. I feel sadness here."

Take a breath.

Allow yourself to feel it.

Notice where it sits in your body.

Then allow it to move.

Sometimes our minds desperately want to create meaning around every emotion.

But our bodies often don't need another story.

They simply need permission to release.

Your Mind Wants to Protect You

Our brains are remarkable.

Their job is to keep us safe.

When an old emotion begins surfacing, the mind often starts searching for an explanation.

It replays conversations.

It revisits painful memories.

It begins connecting dots that don't necessarily need connecting.

It believes it's helping.

But sometimes...

It unintentionally keeps us attached to the very thing we're trying to release.

Every time we replay the story, we reinforce it.

It's a little like pulling something out of the donation pile while decluttering your home.

You almost let it go.

Then you convince yourself to keep it.

The cupboard becomes cluttered again.

Healing asks us to trust that not everything needs to be carried forward.

Healing Is Like Recovering After Exercise

Imagine you've just completed a challenging workout.

The next morning your muscles ache.

You don't assume exercise is bad for you.

You recognise that your body is adapting.

Healing often works in a similar way.

After an energy healing session, counselling appointment or deep personal breakthrough, your emotional body may continue processing long after the session has finished.

Just as a personal trainer reminds you to stretch and drink plenty of water after exercise...

Healing also has aftercare.

Rest.

Hydration.

Gentleness.

Space to process.

Healing isn't something that happens only during the session itself.

It continues long afterwards.

Signs Your Healing Journey Is Moving Forward

While every person's journey is unique, there are some common signs that healing is unfolding.

You may notice:

  • emotions surfacing without an obvious present-day trigger

  • feeling unusually tired as your body processes change

  • becoming more aware of patterns you've ignored for years

  • naturally creating healthier boundaries

  • feeling lighter after allowing emotions to move through

  • losing interest in situations or relationships that once drained you

These experiences can feel uncomfortable.

But discomfort doesn't always mean you're moving in the wrong direction.

Sometimes it means you're finally moving.

Healing Creates Space

When we release old emotional weight, we create room for something new.

New relationships.

New opportunities.

New confidence.

New peace.

Think about the last time you decluttered a room in your home.

After all the hard work, how did it feel?

Lighter.

Calmer.

More spacious.

Healing creates that same spaciousness within us.

It allows us to stop carrying emotional burdens that no longer belong in our lives.

Not because we're pretending they never happened...

But because we've chosen not to let them define our future.

Trust the Process

Healing isn't a race.

It doesn't happen overnight.

Sometimes you'll notice changes within days.

Sometimes it unfolds gently over weeks or months.

Every person's journey is different.

The important thing isn't how quickly you heal.

It's that you continue showing up.

With compassion.

With curiosity.

With patience.

The next time emotions unexpectedly rise to the surface, try asking yourself a different question.

Instead of,

"Why am I feeling worse?"

Ask,

"What might my body finally be ready to release?"

That single shift in perspective can completely change the way you experience your healing journey.

Because healing isn't always about feeling better immediately.

Sometimes...

It's about making space for the peace that's waiting on the other side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal to feel emotional after an energy healing session?

Yes. Many people notice emotions surfacing after energy healing as the body continues processing and releasing old energetic patterns. This experience is often temporary and can be a natural part of the healing journey.

Why do I feel worse after starting my healing journey?

Healing sometimes brings buried emotions to the surface before they can be released. Feeling more emotional doesn't always mean you're getting worse. It can be a sign that your body is finally creating space for healing.

How long do healing symptoms last?

Every person's experience is different. Some people notice emotional shifts for a day or two, while others continue processing over several weeks. Gentle self-care, hydration and allowing emotions to move through naturally can support this process.

Should I stop healing if I feel emotional afterwards?

Not necessarily. If you're working with a trusted practitioner, temporary emotional processing can be a normal part of healing. If you ever have concerns about your physical or mental health, it's important to speak with an appropriate healthcare professional.
