Why You Can't Stick to a Spiritual Practice (And Why It's Probably Not What You Think)
Why You Can't Stick to a Spiritual Practice (And Why It's Probably Not What You Think)
By Kristy | Priestess of the Mystics
Have you ever bought an Oracle deck with the best of intentions...
Only to find it sitting untouched in a drawer months later?
Perhaps you've collected beautiful crystals that now decorate your home but rarely get picked up.
Maybe you've promised yourself countless times that you'll meditate every morning...
Yet life keeps getting in the way.
If any of that sounds familiar, I want to reassure you of something.
You're not failing at spirituality.
And chances are...
You're not lacking discipline either.
The real problem might be much simpler.
Your expectations don't match your life.
We Often Think Spiritual Practice Has to Look a Certain Way
Spend five minutes on social media and it's easy to believe that a meaningful spiritual practice requires hours every day.
The perfect sunrise meditation.
Thirty minutes of journalling.
Breathwork.
Oracle cards.
Manifestation exercises.
Energy work.
Grounding.
A gratitude journal.
A beautifully styled altar.
A crystal grid.
Before long, what began as something inspiring starts feeling completely overwhelming.
You begin thinking,
"If I can't do it properly, why start at all?"
The truth is...
Very few people have three uninterrupted hours every morning.
Most of us have jobs.
Families.
School drop-offs.
Pets demanding breakfast before sunrise.
A never-ending to-do list.
And somehow we're expected to fit an elaborate spiritual routine into an already full life.
No wonder so many people struggle to stay consistent.
Your Spiritual Practice Should Fit Your Life
One of the biggest shifts I encourage my students to make is this:
Stop trying to build someone else's spiritual practice.
Build your own.
A meaningful spiritual practice isn't measured by how many rituals you complete.
It's measured by how connected you feel.
Some days that connection might happen during a twenty-minute meditation.
Other days it might happen while you're waiting for the kettle to boil.
Both count.
Consistency matters far more than perfection.
The Biggest Mistake Beginners Make
When we're excited about spirituality, it's tempting to try everything at once.
Meditation.
Oracle cards.
Manifestation.
Chakras.
Protection.
Energy healing.
Spirit guides.
Tarot.
Crystals.
Sound healing.
Journalling.
It's exciting.
But it's also exhausting.
Trying to learn every spiritual practice at once is a little like joining a gym and deciding you'll master every machine on your very first visit.
You wouldn't expect that from your body.
So why expect it from your spiritual growth?
Instead of trying to build ten new habits overnight, choose one.
Just one.
Let it become part of your life before adding something new.
Start With What Already Exists
One of my favourite pieces of advice is beautifully simple.
Don't try to find extra time.
Use the moments you already have.
If you make yourself a cup of tea every morning...
That's your spiritual practice.
While the kettle boils...
Take three slow breaths.
Ground your energy.
Ask your spirit team,
"What do I need to know today?"
If you enjoy Oracle cards, leave one deck on the kitchen bench.
Pull a card while you wait for your tea.
Read the message before checking your phone.
That entire practice might take less than five minutes.
Yet repeated every day, it begins changing something much deeper.
Not because it takes a long time.
Because it becomes part of who you are.
Spirituality Isn't a To-Do List
One of the biggest traps I see is turning spirituality into another list of tasks.
Meditate.
Journal.
Read cards.
Ground.
Manifest.
Protect.
Connect.
Complete.
Tick.
Repeat.
Eventually the practice starts feeling like another job.
But spirituality was never meant to become another source of pressure.
It's meant to bring you back to yourself.
When your spiritual practice becomes something you have to do, it's easy to lose sight of why you wanted it in the first place.
Instead, ask yourself:
"What practice genuinely makes me feel connected?"
Start there.
You Don't Need More Tools
This might surprise you.
You don't need twenty Oracle decks.
You don't need a cupboard full of crystals.
You don't need expensive incense, elaborate altars or shelves filled with spiritual books.
Those things can absolutely bring joy.
I adore Oracle decks.
I never say no to another crystal.
But they don't create your connection.
You do.
A single Oracle deck used every day will teach you far more than twenty decks left sitting in a drawer.
One crystal you intentionally work with becomes more meaningful than a collection you've forgotten you own.
Spiritual tools are beautiful companions.
They're not the practice itself.

Let Your Practice Grow With You
The most sustainable spiritual practices don't appear overnight.
They evolve.
What begins as pulling one Oracle card each morning might eventually become meditation.
Meditation may naturally lead to journalling.
Journalling might deepen your intuition.
Over time, your practice grows because it feels natural—not because someone told you it had to.
That's the difference between forcing spirituality...
And embodying it.
Your Soul Doesn't Care About Perfect
One of the most comforting realisations I've had over the years is this:
Your soul isn't keeping score.
It doesn't care whether you meditated for sixty minutes or six.
It doesn't compare your altar with someone else's.
It isn't judging how many Oracle decks you own.
Your soul simply delights in the moments you choose connection.
One mindful breath.
One heartfelt prayer.
One quiet cup of tea.
One Oracle card.
One moment of gratitude.
Those small moments, repeated consistently, become something extraordinary.
Because spirituality isn't built through grand gestures.
It's built through tiny moments of presence that quietly become part of your everyday life.
And that's where a true spiritual practice begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I start a spiritual practice?
The best spiritual practice is one you can maintain consistently. Rather than trying to learn everything at once, choose one simple daily practice, such as meditation, pulling an Oracle card or grounding and allow it to become part of your routine before adding anything else.
How long should a daily spiritual practice take?
There is no perfect length. Even five mindful minutes can be incredibly meaningful when practised consistently. The goal isn't creating the longest routine, it’s building a practice that genuinely fits your lifestyle.
Do I need Oracle cards or crystals to be spiritual?
No. Spiritual tools can be beautiful companions, but they aren't essential. Your connection with yourself, your intuition and your spiritual practice comes from your presence and consistency rather than the number of tools you own.
What if I keep starting and stopping?
This is incredibly common. Rather than seeing it as failure, consider whether your expectations are too high. Simplifying your practice and focusing on one small habit often creates much more lasting consistency than trying to do everything at once.
